SCAS shares the Great American Eclipe at Deering Estate

Monday Aug. 21st, the Great American Eclipse held breathless millions across the country while here in Miami Southern Cross Astros shared the eclipse with over 1100 visitors at the Deering Estate. Telescopes, binoculars and video equpment (all properly filtered) were set up on the east lawn next to Biscayne Bay. Zoo Miami Fun

Saturday was sunny and hot at the Miami Zoo as SCAS Astros showed the visiting public high resolution views of the sun in Hydrogen Alpha.

Southern Cross in the news.

This past Friday Southern Cross president Russ Brick and 1st vice president Steve Van Ryn were interviewed by Nicole Perez of Local 10 News about the upcoming Great American Solar Eclipse. Jupiter Doubled Shadow Transit

This past May SCAS Astros captured a double shadow transit on Jupiter. The shadows are from Io and Ganymede. The club 18" dob on it's tracking platform was used with a ZWO high speed camera.The best 1200 frames were used to stack this image. The polar alignment was off slightly so image drift was compensated for in a program called PIPP which recreates the video with the target centere...

Observing at Bill Sadowski Preserve

Bill Sadowski Park tonight with our telescopes.

Some storms around, so we are taking a plastic cover for our telescopes in any case of rain....
There was some success in the month of June observing at Bill Sadowski Park. We had many come to look through the scope and the conditions were steady and clear enough for some looks at the planets and the moon.
